Meshing and export
Implicits and volumes stay exact until you mesh them. This page covers turning them into meshes, choosing the resolution, and cleaning the result for printing or simulation.
Meshing an implicit
Mesh From Implicit samples the implicit on a grid and extracts its surface. The most important input is MinFeatureSize: the voxel size of that grid, in model units. Set it smaller than the smallest detail you need to keep, such as the thinnest wall or strut.
- Each time you halve
MinFeatureSize, the grid has eight times as many voxels, so start coarse and refine. BoundingBoxlimits meshing to part of the model. Leave it empty to mesh the whole implicit.Adaptivity(0 to 1) uses fewer, larger triangles in flat regions. Above about 0.3 the mesh mixes triangles and quads.Smoothingruns mean-curvature passes before meshing. It rounds the surface and softens creases, with slight shrinkage.
Preview Field 3D renders the implicit directly on the GPU, without meshing. Use it while you design, and mesh once the shape is settled.
Meshing a scalar volume
Mesh From Volume extracts the surface of a scalar volume at an Isovalue, normally 0. Its resolution is the voxel size the volume was created with, so set that on
Scalar Volume From Field,
Scalar Volume From Mesh or
Scalar Volume From Points, or change it with
Resample.
Cleaning the mesh
The panel 5. Remesh rebuilds a mesh's triangles without changing its shape:
Remesh Sharp keeps sharp edges and grades triangle size by curvature. Use it for parts with sharp edges and crisp features.
Remesh Smooth produces evenly sized triangles across the whole surface. Use it for organic shapes and smooth lattices.
Sections and contours
Contour extracts the cross-section of an implicit on a plane as curves, without meshing. Use it for drawings, slice checks and toolpaths.
Getting the result out of Grasshopper
Meshes from Morphé are ordinary Rhino meshes. Bake them, or wire them into any Grasshopper component, and export from Rhino in the format you need: STL or 3MF for printing, OBJ for other tools.
