Core concepts

Morphé works with four kinds of data. Knowing what each one is, and how to move between them, makes every other page easier to read.

Fields

A Field gives a value at every point in space. It has no bounds and no resolution: it is a formula, evaluated wherever it is needed. Most fields in Morphé are signed distances, negative inside a shape and positive outside, but a field can carry any value: a temperature, a density, a grading.

You build fields from expressions with Field From Expression, from coordinates with X, Y and Z, from measured samples with Field From Points, and combine them with the math components in 1. Field.

Implicits

An Implicit is a field with a bounding box. The box is what makes a shape usable: it tells Morphé where to look when previewing, contouring or meshing. Every primitive in 2. Implicit outputs an implicit, and booleans, blends, offsets and lattices keep it implicit, so the model stays exact and resolution-free until you mesh it.

To give any field a box, wrap it with Implicit From Field. Two-dimensional shapes (circle, rectangle, polygon and so on) output an Implicit 2D, which you can loft into 3D with Loft.

Scalar volumes

A Scalar Volume stores values on a voxel grid. Unlike a field, it has a resolution, set by its voxel size. That makes it the right representation for operations that work on sampled data: smoothing, filleting, growing and shrinking, relaxing, and anything that starts from a scan or a mesh.

Morphé stores the values near the surface only, in a narrow band. The Bandwidth input on the creation components sets how thick that band is, in voxels. Raise it before large offsets or heavy smoothing, which need room to grow into.

Vector volumes

A Vector Volume stores a vector at every voxel. Build one from the gradient of a field or a volume, or from point and vector data such as a CFD export. Analyse it with Curl, Divergence and Magnitude, and use it to move geometry with Advect.

A good rule of thumb

Model with implicits for as long as you can: they are exact and cost nothing until you mesh. Switch to a scalar volume when you need an operation that only makes sense on sampled data, such as a global fillet or smoothing a scan.
