Smooth

Nickname SmoothMorphe › 3. Scalar Volume › FilterOutputs Scalar Volume

Smooths a scalar volume with a blur of the chosen radius. Pick the kernel from the right-click menu, and add an optional mask to smooth only part of the volume.

Raw voxel data (left) and the same volume after Smooth with a Gaussian kernel (right).

Modes

Right-click the component to choose the kernel. All three are blurs over the same radius, so they share one set of inputs and you can switch between them without rewiring.

Mode What it does
Gaussian (default) A weighted average that falls off with distance. The softest, most natural result for general smoothing.
Mean An even average over the radius. Slightly stronger than Gaussian at the same radius.
Median Takes the middle value of each neighbourhood. Removes speckle and isolated noise while keeping edges sharper.

Inputs

NameNickTypeDefaultDescription
Scalar VolumeSScalar VolumeThe input scalar volume.
RadiusRNumber1Filter radius.
MaskoptionalMScalar VolumeOptional volume mask: where (and how strongly) the filter applies. Build it from a region or falloff field with 'From Field'. Unconnected = the filter applies everywhere.
Mask RangeoptionalRgInterval0 to 1Mask values mapped to 0..1 strength: at Min the filter is off, at Max it applies fully, blended in between.
InvertoptionalIvBooleanFalseInvert the mask, so the filter applies where it otherwise would not.

Outputs

Scalar VolumeSScalar VolumeThe output volume.

Example definition

Smoothing the rim of a lens
The same lens blades, smoothed with a Gaussian kernel: the sharp rim softens by the filter radius.
Try
  • Drag Radius to smooth more or less.
  • Switch to Median from the right-click menu to remove speckle while keeping edges.
  • Change a for the rim radius, t for the thickness at the centre and n for the number of blades.

Smoothing only part of a volume

Build the mask from a region or falloff field with Scalar Volume From Field, then wire it into Mask. Use Mask Range to set where the effect starts and reaches full strength, so it fades in rather than stopping at a hard edge.

Tips

  • Heavy smoothing needs room to grow into. If large radii look clipped, raise Bandwidth on the component that created the volume (default 3 voxels).
  • For curvature-driven smoothing, try Relax. For rounding sharp edges, use Fillet.
Vector volumes

Vector volumes have their own Smooth component in panel 4, with Mean and Gaussian modes.
